Growing up we had a special tradition of leaving May Baskets on friend's doorsteps on May 1st. It was such an exciting day! We would make little baskets out of construction paper, fill the bottom with left over Easter grass, and then put little flowers and/or candy and treats inside. You would then take them to your friend's house and hang them on the door handle, ring the doorbell and then run away. We started this a couple of years ago with my oldest daughter. She cannot wait until Thursday. I figured I better give you all a heads up in case any of you find a little treat on your doorstep on Thursday! :)
Did you ever do this growing up? If you want to participate just get some construction paper and start making crafts! It's super fun!

Yes! I did! I loved making the May Day baskets. When I was very young we lived in Shawnee, OK. May Day, at that time, was celebrated by the whole town. The kindergarten that I attended (Kindergarten wasn't required by law, so the only ones around were private. Man..I'm REALLY showing my age!). Anyway...the Kindergarten I attended always had a May Pole. The teachers would hang beautiful streamers from the pole and assign each kid a streamer. We would then "dance" (walk) around the may pole wrapping it with all the colorful streamers.
I remember loving May Day and looking forward to it all year (probably because it meant spring was here and school was almost out!;-)
I love this!!!!! We're (ok...I'm)making them right now! What a fun idea! Boston is NOT into craft projects. He'd rather sweep the floor or play with cars. He's such a boy! Maybe London will be my crafting buddy some day! ;0)
I've never heard of this. How sweet!
I attended private school in South Carolina and the school always celebrated May Day. The big celebration would be in the gym on the evening of May 1st. Elementary students would do the May Pole Dance around the May Pole that was set up in the center of the gym. Then we had the May Day Court. This was made up of 3 chosen couples from Freshman through Senior classes. I was in the court my Junior year. All of the girls wore long, white gowns and the boys wore suits. We walked through a canopy of flowers and then the previously chosen king and queen (Seniors) came through last. We sat up on stage and watched the May Pole Dance and all the ceremony celebrating Spring. It was fun. I don't hear of May Day celebrations very often these days.
